'30 Minutes Or Less': Five Other Walking Movie Bombs
by Kevin Sullivan In "30 Minutes or Less," which speeds into theaters today, Jesse Eisenberg's character, Nick, has to rob a bank before a bomb strapped to his chest goes off. We won't tell you how it all ends up, but we will tell you that Mr. Eisenberg is in pretty good company -- plenty of other film characters have found themselves in similar situations that occasionally found happy endings, but frequently ended in a fiery blaze. Check out some of Eisenberg's bomb-bastic cinematic contemporaries after the jump! Annie (Sandra Bullock) in "Speed" Situation: After escaping the booby trapped bus that couldn't drive slower than 50 miles per hour, Annie gets kidnapped by the bomber (Dennis Hopper), strapped into a pressure-sensitive bomb and is handcuffed to a subway pole. Outcome: Jack (Keanu Reeves) comes to the rescue, disarming the bomb and getting the girl, but not before knocking the bad guy's head off with a subway light. V (Hugo Weaving) in "V for Vendetta" Situation: As a final act of rebellion, V plans to blow up Parliament in a dystopic future London, but dies shortly before he's able to ignite the fuse. Outcome: V's protege, Evey (Natalie Portman), finishes the job for him and sends his body toward Parliament in a subway car rigged to explode. Black suit man (Suhail Aldabbach) in "The Hurt Locker" Situation: Sargent First Class William James (Jeremy Renner) gets called in to disarm a bomb strapped to an innocent Iraqi man. Though American soldiers approach the man with suspicion, a translator assures James and his team that the man is innocent. James examines the bomb and finds that it is locked onto the man with case-hardened steel and is set to go off in two minutes. Outcome: James doesn't have the equipment to remove the locks in time and is forced to let the man detonate. Max (Lloyd Bridges) in "Blown Away" Situation: In order to get revenge on his former partner, Irish terrorist Ryan Gaerity (Tommy Lee Jones) fits a home-made bomb onto the man's uncle. Outcome: Jimmy (Jeff Bridges) arrives just in time to see his uncle explode. J.D. (Christian Slater) in "Heathers" Situation: After assisting in a series of murders, Veronica (Winona Ryder) tells J.D. she will no longer kill and fakes a suicide. Distraught, J.D. straps a bomb to his chest in order to blow up the high school. Outcome: Veronica momentarily stops J.D. from detonating, but does not kill him. He later sets the bomb off in front of her. Tell us what you think in the comments section and on Twitter!
