Your Christmas Viewing is Settled
“There are three reasons to watch a Christmas film. […] I have the perfect culmination to all three of those scenarios, and it not only involves a shit-ton of novelty songs, but also Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. So here’s the truest thing I’ll ever tell you: Holiday Inn is the Classic Hollywood Christmas Movie to rule them all, and the $2.99 you’ll spend renting it on iTunes is a third of what you’d spend on a glass of wine at a respectable establishment. (That is how I judge expenses: that sparkly Christmas dress costs five G.O.W [glasses of wine]; a ticket to see The Fassbender in the theater costs two.)” [The Hairpin]

'Heist' hunt finds 52,000 on Facebook
Tower Heist's "Heist It Back" Facebook game
Now that nearly every film has its own Facebook page, studios are figuring out how to harness social media more effectively. For November's launch of "Tower Heist," Universal Pictures offered up 1 million Facebook credits to users for the Brett Ratner-helmed action comedy as part of an online scavenger hunt dubbed "Heist It Back." Concept tapped into the pic's plot in which characters, played by Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them. Online players earned Facebook credits by uncovering "Heist" buttons hidden within Facebook pages or getting friends to join the game. More than 52,000 Facebook users played the game during the three weeks prior to the film's release on Nov. 4., according to Universal Pictures, which developed the game with interactive agency the Branding Firm and digital goods developer ifeelgoods. Altogether, players performed 384,391 digital "heists," invited 94,062 friends to participate and posted 18,617 personal stories about the game. Those posts garnered 208,000 likes and comments, propelling the game's total Facebook impressions to 4.1 million. Overall, the promotion generated 157 million page impressions across the site. Players earned two Facebook credits for performing a heist and three credits for referring a friend. The game proved so popular that producers lowered the number of credits earned for posting a story to avoid depleting the promotion's 1 million credits. Users can redeem Facebook Credits (worth 10) for digital movies or other games on the website. For example, Universal rents and sells "The Big Lebowski" on Facebook and had a "Scarface" version of "Mafia Wars" on the site. The key to the game's success was its ability to reward players. "What (traditional campaigns) don't have is the viral effect where you have opportunities for people to engage and share," said Scott Silverman, co-founder and VP of marketing at Ifeelgoods. "You're getting 10-20 times more viral impact than you would on a standard campaign. When you look at the ability to use Facebook Credits, people are so eager to receive them that just getting 50 or a dollar of Facebook credits was an incentive for people to engage." Starship Troopers Remake Planned
Do you want to know more?Somewhere, buried deep in the heart of Hollywood, a pulsing brain bug is slowly making plans to remake every move ever produced. Well, the image is fitting at least, since someone is now planning to tackle a new version of Starship Troopers. First splattering across our screens in 1997, Starship Troopers remains one of the most fun entries in the Paul Verhoeven blood, boobs 'n' bombs era that also spawned the likes of Basic Instinct, RoboCop and Showgirls (we didn't say the bombs were all on screen, now did we?) For all its OTT action, Troopers managed to be a satire of Robert Heinlein-style sci-fi, albeit with a subtlety bypass, since Verhoeven's Hollywood output wouldn't know what subtlety meant even if it had Word Of The Day toilet paper. The movie finds mankind in conflict with giant, marauding bugs, who enjoy swarming human armies and launching giant plasma poops into space. Not known for the calibre of its acting performances, it was nevertheless a chance for Neil Patrick Harris to get some work in the years before his big comeback. The main brain behind the revival is prolific producer Neal Moritz, the man behind the Fast & The Furious films and several thousand other titles. It's not really shocking that he'd turn to Starship Troopers, since he's already shepherding one Verhoeven remake to the screen with Total Recall. Now he's hired Thor/X-Men: First Class contributors Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to have a crack at a new script. Wonder if they can match original writer Ed Neumeier's cheeky wit?[[Poll559]]

Alan Rickman Returns to Broadway With Attitude
NY (AP) The budding friendship between actor Alan Rickman and playwright Theresa Rebeck came to a screeching halt as soon as they started working together. All pleasantries and tenderness were put aside when he was hired to star in her new play "Seminar," which makes its world premiere on Broadway this month. Both strong-willed, neither Rickman nor Rebeck wanted to have to tiptoe around hurt feelings."You hope the friendship survives the process but, unfortunately, once you're into the process of putting a play on and a new play at that I have to be as uncompromising as she is," says Rickman. "The animal in me takes over. You're as polite as possible, but it's not always possible."The friendship, happily, did survive. Both sides say so. "It's an extraordinary privilege to work with him. I have never for one second lost my awareness of that," says Rebeck. "He's just a superb artist and I feel like I'm in a tennis game with somebody who is just raising my game."The dark comedy, in which Rickman plays a berating novelist-turned-teacher, also stars Lily Rabe, Hamish Linklater, Jerry O'Connell and Hettienne Park as his intimidated four writing students. During the course of the play, the instructor reveals he's just as insecure as his young students.Rickman, 65, may admit to being uncompromising as an actor, but during an interview at the Golden Theatre he says he has nothing but respect for playwrights such as Rebeck, who create new dramas for him to "get my hands dirty.""I have every sympathy for writers. It's a mystery to me what they do. I can edit. I can cross out and say, 'I'm not saying that' or, 'How about we move this to here? Wouldn't that make that bit of the story better?'" he says. "But where any of it comes from is beyond me. I will never write a play or a novel."Best known as the potions professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series, Rickman returns to Broadway for the first time since he appeared in Noel Coward's "Private Lives" in 2002, which he's happy to see being revived. He says he likes what he sees this time in a production that stars Kim Cattrall and Paul Gross. "It's a great play and other people should be doing it," Rickman says."I'm glad to see this time round what seems like a reasonable number of actual plays fresh writing and that people are actually going. I hope that's a sign of the times that people actually want some fresh meat rather than just fodder."Rickman was last in town in January playing the title role in Henrik Ibsen's "John Gabriel Borkman" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and met Rebeck, who he has admired from plays such as "The Understudy" and "Mauritius." She saw his Borkman, and asked him to perform in a reading of her "Seminar.""It became something else when spoken than it was on the page. Not better or worse. Just different. And certainly alive," he says. He was smitten and agreed to return to it after filming "Gambit" with Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth. "It's important to me for a theater-trained actor to go back. It's like your religion."Rebeck acknowledges that working with Rickman isn't always the easiest thing, but says it has been rewarding. Asked to describe him, she has a hard time: "He can be prickly. And testy. But he's a really kind person. He's a prince, really. I mean, he's complicated. Look, he's got a lot of colors," she says, laughing. "There have been times when I've thought, 'I'd better stay away from rehearsal for a couple of days.'"Rickman says he had no role in hiring the four young actors who appear with him and has never worked with them before, although he has a tie to Linklater, having worked with his mother on some voice work. He resists the notion that he's the leader."I'm on stage with four very powerful forces, which is great," he says. This time around, the British actor has found an old friend in town actually in the theater across the street: Daniel Radcliffe, who is making his musical theater debut in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."Rickman says he was in the audience for the first preview. "I thought he was phenomenal then and then I went to see him again just before we opened," says the older man. "He's amazing. It looks like he's been doing it all his life. Generous. Honest. Watch out, because it's been his 'drama school' doing that musical in many ways."Rickman himself is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and a former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Even after a memorable turn as Bruce Willis' nemesis the psychopath Hans in 1988's "Die Hard," Rickman returned to the stage, especially at productions at the Royal Court Theatre. His other film credits include "Love, Actually," ''Galaxy Quest" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."He's been on Broadway twice before and each time earned a Tony Award nomination for "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" in 1987 and "Private Lives" almost a decade ago.A Shakespearean actor who performed in "The Tempest," ''Love's Labour's Lost" and "Antony and Cleopatra," Rickman hasn't had time to see the new film "Anonymous" by Roland Emmerich that contends Shakespeare was a simpleton, a fraud and perhaps a murderer. Rickman is well aware of the debate the swirls over the Bard."The only thing I want whenever I hear this thing being argued is, 'Please, somebody invent a time machine.' I mean, I'd really like to go back and be in the audience of the Globe as they're all screaming and shouting, booing and hissing," he says. "But then also one would find out. I don't know. I'm just glad somebody wrote them."Rickman is a big champion of writers and so looks unhappily on the reality TV trend. Telling stories, he argues, is a human need, not just pointing a camera at people and having them babble."We're dead as a species if we don't tell stories because then we don't know who we are," he says. "It was always thrilling to me to see a kid lost in the new Harry Potter book."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Laredoans Speak: Voices on Immigration
A Border Town Pictures production. Created by Victor A. Martinez, Ryan Schafer, Pepe Serna. Executive producer, Frank Esposito, Frederick Wise. Directed, compiled by Victor A. Martinez, Ryan Schafer. With: Raul Salinas, Henry Cuellar, Juan Garza, Robert Greenblum, Richard Pauza Junior., Pepe Serna, Robert Cremo, Jesus Martinez. In Victor A. Martinez and Ryan Schafer's naive, sloppy documentary, Laredoans (people from Laredo) indeed speak their marbles, or at best a couple of of these do. Some six or seven males (women plainly absent), together with a mayor, an immigration lawyer, a congressman along with a "coyote," offer sights on immigration. Regrettably, all of them the same factor -- and it is nothing new, affecting or articulate. Pic bows November. 18 at Gotham's Quad Cinema before moving towards the dustbin. In various rhetorical styles, in the careful evasiveness from the Texas congressman towards the contemptuousness from the silhouetted smuggler, the participants argue with respect to guest-worker visas, consider border walls an insult and believe People in mexico are discriminated against because of racism. They produce their clincher -- America is really a country of immigrants! -- using the type of enthusiasm that generally comes with a recently minted thought. One interviewee even quotes the Emma Lazarus poem at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty, verbatim. Occasionally, rebus-like record charts, whose relevance is tangential at best, occupy the screen for lengthy stretches sans commentary.Camera (color, HD), Martinez editor, Schafer music, Christian Mendoza. Although nobody may have predicted it, the zeitgeist then conspired to supply Margin Call extra currency. Pauline Kael Biographer: Why Covering the Legendary Film Critic Would be a 'Tremendous Challenge' (Q&A)
John Kellow continues to be receiving praise for his biography of legendary film critic Pauline Kael, which hits stores Thursday. Within the book, entitled Pauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime, the author sheds lights on light around the voice that championed Bonnie and Clyde,"her unsuccessful Hollywood adventure and her battles with William Shawn.our editor recommendsPauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime: Book ReviewHow Hollywood Lured and Abandoned Critic Pauline Kael (Exclusive Book Excerpt)NY Film Festival Wrap: Special Occasions, Fortuitous Encounters and Spontaneous CombustionHow Pauline Kael Might Election: No on 'Social Network,' Maybe on 'Black Swan'Pauline Kael's Editor: 'She'd Laugh at 'Black Swan,' Election for 'The Fighter' Kellow sitting lower using the Hollywood Reporter's chief film critic Todd McCarthy to discuss the difficulties involved with writing it, her naivete if this found Hollywood and what didn't result in the book. The Hollywood Reporter: What first illuminated the concept in your soul to attempt this project? Kellow: I started reading through Pauline Kael's reviews after i was around 13. She'd a voice that spoke in my experience immediately. I just read her for a long time and committed great portions of her reviews to memory. I favor to create biographies that to some degree represent fresh territory. Setting lower Pauline's existence appeared just like a tremendous challenge -- so it was, because it switched out. The Review: Pauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime THR:Has there have you been a biography of the film critic before? How about experts in other fields? What made covering a critic, somebody that by character is really a reactor, not the same as another subjects you've handled? Kellow: I don't realize that there's been a biography of the movie critic so far. There has been biographies of theater experts -- Kathleen Tynan authored an excellent one about her husband, Kenneth. Among my personal favorite facets of focusing on Pauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime was the opportunity to track the influences that assisted form her taste and elegance. Also, penning this book offered me a great chance to explore the film good reputation for the sixties and ྂs. It had been exciting to exhibit how that which was happening on screen actually was, to some large degree, Pauline's existence. THR: Apart from Pauline's released writing, the other material been around in archives or her personal collection that you should draw upon? Letters, journals, datebooks, etc.? Kellow: I'd great luck in getting use of Pauline's extensive archive in the Lilly Library at Indiana College in Bloomington. It's a treasure chest. You will find very couple of letters from Pauline herself, but she appears to possess saved virtually every letter she received -- even letters from fans and visitors. She always stated she didn't desire a biography written, but she certainly saw into it that her existence was thoroughly catalogued, and so i'm unsure In my opinion her. EXCLUSIVE BOOK EXCERPT: How Hollywood Lured and Abandoned Critic Pauline Kael THR: The first existence material is especially fascinating. How have you find out about her childhood, family, early reactions to literature and films, her difficult associations at Berkeley and subsequent struggles before belatedly penetrating appropriately? Kellow: Research. I visited Petaluma, Calif., and learned a good deal concerning the community of Jewish chicken ranchers by which she was raised. I had been extremely lucky: I discovered her ex-husband, Edward Landberg, who had been living in Berkeley. He was her only husband, although she loved to confuse people by letting them know she'd been married three occasions. As her daughter Gina stated, "She loved a great story." I had been extremely lucky in rounding up many people who had labored together with her when she was programming the Berkeley Cinema Guild, the country's first twin art house. That duration of the mid- to late nineteen fifties is just one of my personal favorite areas of it. THR: I never got the sense that Pauline was ever really deeply in love with anybody. And almost all the associations she did have, with males who have been basically gay, were set-ups for disaster. How have you arrived at see view her emotional existence? Did she just sublimate anything else to movies? Kellow: I believe Pauline is at love in early stages. I certainly think she was deeply in love with the poet Robert Horan, who had been gay. However I think she felt, quite early, that love between a couple never survived. And let's face the facts, frequently it doesn't! I believe she learned in early stages to not rely upon love. Her passion for the films was another thing. That they could rely on, and trust. I've attempted to not hammer the entire seduction-of-the-movies idea way too hard in my opinion. But there's no getting away it. PHOTOS: Netflix's 10 Most-Leased Movies ever THR: You point out that in earlier years she was constantly writing little plays, tales, screen ideas she'd send to Hollywood and so forth. Have you read a lot of her creative writing during these areas? Was there any merit to the from it? Any method for you to describe it? Kellow: Pauline will be the first to confess that her attempts at creative writing weren't excellent. Plus they aren't. I've read carefully through all of the pieces that survive. They're arch and filled with ideas and attitudes, however they just don't move significantly. The figures just don't possess the breath of existence. Related Subjects Pauline Kael 1 2 next last

Empire's Mission: Impossible Cover Lands
Cruise into your nearest newsagent Dodgy puns aside, the December issue of Empire gives plenty of reasons to get excited. Not the least of them is the return of Tom Cruise to the front cover for the first time since May 2006. It's a big "welcome back" to a bona fide movie star and a taster for an exclusive chat with the man himself about a variety of topics, from the return of Ethan Hunt and the decision to shoot with IMAX cameras, to the controversy that's his casting as Jack Reacher.{Empire MI4 Cover}The fourth outing for Hunt and the good people of IMF (the other one) already has a seriously saucy trailer, plus a dossier's worth of pics showing Cruise dangling from a variety of improbable locations, so the presence of Pixar alum Brad 'The Incredibles' Bird, the franchise's fourth director, has clearly injected new jeopardy and fizz back into things. Cruise certainly thinks so. "[Brad and I] talked a lot about 'popcorn moments," he tells Empire. "You know, where you want to grab your popcorn. That's what I always hoped Mission would be for an audience. And I really think we've nailed it." Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is out on December 26. Homeland: Round the Number of Showtime's Twisty New Thriller
Homeland In Homeland, terrorist plots aren't separated in 24 several hours as well as the hero doesn't save your valuable day by slaughtering suspects. ten years following a horror of 9/11, good and evil are from time to time definately not black-and-white-colored. "This is not 24, that have a muscular response to what went lower on 9/11," states British actor Damian Lewis, who plays Sgt. Nicholas Brody, the Marine who's be considered a hero after eight years of incarceration by Al Qaeda, round the set near Charlotte now now. "It absolutely was a show due to it is time. Now we live in a worldwide where people are divided concerning the simplest approach to wage combat terror." According to an Israeli hit series, Homeland "dramatizes the collision of two very legendary figures, CIA agent Barbara Mathison (Claire Danes) and saved Bang Brody, all of whom are damaged with the occasions in the last 10 years,In . states executive producer Alex Gansa, who along with Howard Gordon, his partner on Homeland, produced 24. With various tip from an Iraqi source the American Bang remains switched, Mathison helps it be her pursuit to prove Brody can be a traitor. States Gansa, "Their cat-and-mouse game propels the drama through this season. In . Mathison might be the show's problematic hero, a great operative independently impacted by bipolar disease. Spurred on because Al Qaeda is planning another attack round the U.S, she's hell-bent not to miss the twelve signs she will get she overlooked 10 years earlier. Brody, she thinks, is vital. What Barbara sees as she monitors Brody within the Virginia home, watching him find it hard to interact with his children and wife, Jessica (V's Morena Baccarin), is ambiguous. Evidence she can't see is at the first kind POW's tormented mind. This is when he relives his hideous torture, his forced killing from the fellow captive as well as the incongruous functions of kindness from terrorist Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban), whom the CIA is dedicated to conquering. Carrie's CIA mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) watches and worries about his obsessed protégée. "He cares a great deal about her," states Patinkin, "which he thinks her intuition and keen intelligence make her much like it'll get. He is not not aware of her feelings, but this is often a individual that could really save countless lives whether or not this came lower in it.In . Danes was the producers' first choice to play Barbara. "She's this intelligence, this vitality about her," states Gordon. Their protagonist was referred to as Claire, even though they thought the actress wouldn't buy TV series. Danes did not have doubts. "Television has turned into a very fertile medium," she states, "which show is very smart." An Emmy champion on her behalf 2010 starring role in HBO's Temple Grandin, Danes states she "admires" her character, emotional warts hpv warts and many types of. "I recognize her conflicts which i've empathy on her behalf. She's reckless, very intense and strong, yet fragile and lonely. She's also an tough to depend on narrator." Selecting the very best actor to see the conflicted Marine was much more challenging. Ultimately, Lewis, last seen in the awesome procedural Existence, was coaxed from his London where you can do another U.S. series. "The show is dramatic and heart-stopping," according to him. "Concurrently, it's contentious, questionable products to express, because people individuals who're safeguarding our freedom can alter to become individuals who, once uncovered to numerous belief systems, believe by them." Despite the fact that scene shooting around the late September day shows one minute of real tenderness between Brody and also the wife, in tonight's episode there's tension in your home as Brody evolves suspicious that they an affair along with his nearest friend, Capt. Mike Faber (Diego Klattenhoff). Though Jessica has broken it well with Mike, "she still loves him," Baccarin describes. "Sherrrd like to produce things use Brody, but she also wants him being the man she understood before - they will not be.In . Since the season continues, look for the capture from the Al Qaeda member who guarded Brody in Afghanistan, a sizable reveal from the important person from his past, and, in the Manchurian Candidate-like twist, the entrance of individuals in politics who believe the American hero would be the perfect method to achieve cause real progress. The producers promise much will probably be clarified with the finish in the first season. "We'll uncover what really happened to Brody in captivity," states Gordon, "are available to more definitive understanding from the guy. The actual way it all unravels will test our fundamental understanding of who's good and who's bad." Gansa hopes Homeland will probably be as representational from the national era as 24 switched to become. "It is not a Jack Bauer world any more - it's a Barbara Mathison world," according to him. "You will discover more interesting questions than whether a Marine can be a terrorist or else. If he's been finished captivity, he's hypothetically in this limbo condition trying to find out for themselves whether or he not he'll undergo by getting an action of terrorism. REVIEW: Paranormal Activity 3 Good for a Few Jumps and Giggles, But Evaporates Almost Immediately
My complicated muddle of feelings toward the Paranormal Activity franchise are directly related to my acute personal susceptibility to jump scares. They work on me embarrassingly well. A film that’s as reliant on them on Paranormal Activity 3, the series’ latest episode, can have me as twitchy as an meth addict out of agonized anticipation of the inevitable “boo.” After all, the majority of the shocks in these films are low-fi affairs — that’s one of their signatures — that, taken alone, are no great shakes: A door slamming itself shut, the sound of footsteps in an unoccupied part of the house. The franchise stakes itself on the time spent waiting for these things to happen, as we take in characters in the mundane, vulnerable pursuits of sleeping or puttering around the house. These images come to us via the fiction of an unmanned camera; there’s no one there to step in to warn us when the spooky stuff pops up. Like its predecessors, Paranormal Activity 3 is packed with moments primed to make you jerk back in your seat and fling your precious $8 popcorn in the air, some supernatural in origin and others goofy fake-outs. In between, it teases out the tension via the nighttime surveillance setups we’ve come to expect, as something demonic makes itself known in a suburban California tract home. I spent the majority of the film (as I did with its predecessors) stretched taut as a wire and filled with grumbly resentment. Is it effective? On a surface level, sure, though any feature so shaped around jolts is bound to be excruciating to me in about the same way one built around the graphic dismembering of puppies would be upsetting. But this easy button-pushing masks an experience that’s awfully insubstantial. Good for a few old-school jumps and giggles, Paranormal Activity 3 evaporates once it’s over like morning mist. Directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman and written by Christopher B. Landon, Paranormal Activity 3 continues the prequelly backwards-tracking of the last installment, flashing back to 1988 and events documented on VHS. After an intro that finds grown Katie (Katie Featherston) storing a box of tapes in the basement of her pregnant sister Kristi (Sprague Grayden), the film plunges into the footage that was stored on them, of a time when the girls — now played by Chloe Csengery and a smashingly creepy Jessica Tyler Brown — were living with their mom, Julie (Lauren Bittner), and her boyfriend Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith), a wedding videographer who gets drawn into taping the strange happenings around their house at night. Other than a few set details (Teddy Ruxpin proves capable of being menacing without any demonic assistance) and a hideous period sweater or two, Paranormal Activity 3 doesn’t go out of its way to recall the ’80s. It’s a choice that thankfully extends to its footage, which other than the brief use of a corner timestamp doesn’t attempt to mimic the look or quality of VHS. When trying to persuade Julie to fool around with him on camera, Dennis captures the hint of a supernatural presence in the room, and sets up cameras by their bed, in the girls’ loft, and downstairs to document the goings-on at night, when the majority of the oddness appears to take place. The activity is centered on Kristi’s imaginary best friend, Toby, who she hints — telling Dennis, for instance, that if she provides more details about Toby “I won’t be safe” — is a far more substantive and far less benign presence than her mother’s “kids will be kids” dismissals indicate. The last of the three placements involves the film’s best idea, a camcorder that’s mounted on an oscillating fan base in order to cover both the living room and kitchen. A few clever, suspenseful scenes unfold between the two locations as we’re locked into the slow pan of the lens. Something ominous seems to be unfolding in one end of the floor, but we can’t stay with it, having to continue along with the impassive scan of the camera. By the time we get back, it’s gone, or grown, or relocated. It’s a canny twist on the limited perspective that feeds so many of the scares in the trilogy in general, as things happen off screen that we can only hear or are forced to guess at. This idea also comes up with the camera in the girls’ room, which focuses on them but excludes the closet in the corner, a low-ceiling space in which Kristi claims Toby lives. Where Paranormal Activity 3’s weak points show are in the unbelievable silliness of its characters, who in typical haunted-house fashion deny and stay put longer than any sane human being would in the face of such disturbances, in the found footage problem of having to justify why someone would keep filming in life-threatening situations, and in its mythology. The franchise has been forced to come up with additional backgrounding as it reaches into the past and introduces new characters, and what’s provided here is a halfhearted mix of familiar elements from films like Poltergeist, The Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby that come together for a finale that pulls out all the stops but ends up feeling a touch anticlimactic. The ending also raises some questions about how this film can possibly fit in with the other two — “they were young and they forgot” won’t really cut it. Then again, no one asks for Paranormal Activity’s answer to The Silmarillion — the film provides a few imaginatively eerie sequences and enough jolts to entertain a midnight crowd (and make this critic curl up into a ball of cowardice), which is all it needs to deliver.

Moviefone Open Thread: Why Aren't You Going to the Movies?
"I'm really concerned about how soft things are," a panicked and unnamed longtime studio executive told Nikki Finke about the depressed box office numbers that have hit Hollywood in the last two months. "I'm sitting here looking at grosses and I'm concerned for the industry. What's worrying me is where are those hardcore movie fans at this point?" Probably still seeing movies, actually. The better question is: where is everyone else? Why aren't you going to the movies? Despite what many experts felt would be an easy road to nearly $20 million, the well-received remake of 'Footloose' earned just $16 million over the weekend -- putting it in runner-up position behind 'Real Steel,' which might not break $100 million domestically despite lofty costs. In fact, the last film to earn more than $100 million at the box office was released all the way back in August: 'The Help' cracked the barrier, meaning Hollywood hasn't seen a triple-digit grosser in over two months. All of which is to say: things could be better. Perhaps even the movies. As Finke herself wrote, "I've been reporting how younger males - which used to be Hollywood's target audience - have been no longer consistently (and indiscriminately) going to the movies since August. [...] I say Hollywood should expect the worst when they release a succession of mostly dreadful pics. This weekend's total gross won't edge much over $80M - which is a whopping -35% from last year when 'Jackass 3D' opened to $50M. (I know what you're thinking: Who are the jackasses now?) This is not a good situation for the studios to be in as moviegoing enters the all-important holiday season." It's not, but what Finke and her unnamed studio source fail to mention is that the seven films in the top-ten of the box office this weekend have fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with 'Moneyball,' '50/50,' 'The Ides of March,' 'Dolphin Tale' and 'The Lion King 3D' over 80 percent. Far from "mostly dreadful." Moreover, the weekly depreciations for these films have been scant: the only films to dip more than 40 percent over the weekend were 'Real Steel' (down just 40.1 percent, a testament to how the Hugh Jackman-led film is playing with families) and 'The Lion King 3D' (down just 41.1 percent despite losing 300 screens). Adult audiences are finding 'The Ides of March,' 'Moneyball' and '50/50,' which should have been expected since adults aren't likely to run out on opening weekend to see a movie. In this case, the movies are actually good! (See also: 'Contagion' and 'Drive,' both of which had successful runs.) Even a massive disappointment like 'Warrior' was one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. Quality, for once, doesn't seem to be the problem. So, where is the disconnect? Why have young audiences apparently tuned out? Check the programming. As prominent blogger David Poland wrote, "If you want to point at a single movie that really works for this audience since 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' be my guest. What was this, the biggest, most consistent audience supposed to go see? Couldn't sell them '30 Minutes or Less.' Okay, what else ya got? Retreads. 'Conan,' 'Final Destination 5,' 'Fright Night'... a shock-thriller-sell remake of a movie no one under 40 knows in 'Straw Dogs' (which would have done better sold as a thinking man's thriller). Did anyone really expect bigger numbers for a cancer dramedy ['50/50']... even a good one? [Jason] Statham's numbers are about right [for 'Killer Elite'], given a new distributor. $25m on 'ABduction' is a miracle and over $30m on 'Drive' is a downright hit. As noted earlier, 'Real Steel' went younger and succeeded in that goal." What of 'Real Steel'? With $108 million worldwide already, and rollouts in more foreign territories to come -- plus no family films in the marketplace until Oct. 28 when 'Puss in Boots' rolls out -- the film should easily crest above $200 million worldwide before it shuffles out of the theater. Hardly a flop, but not necessarily the type of eye-popping number that gets people excited. Following a summer where even crap like 'Green Lantern' grossed over $50 million during its opening weekend, anything less than stratospheric bank is a failure. Which, if anything, is this fall's downfall: there hasn't been a breakout cultural phenomenon. Katie notifies Micah that whether it's a ghost that has been haunting her since she will be a kid. She utilizes a psychic who notifies the happy couple the haunting is usually the job from the demon which they need to use a demonologist. Micah, being the compassionate boyfriend he's, pokes fun at Katie and will not usher within the demonologist. (More often than not there's one idiot in the horror film who'll not admit the apparent). However, he confirms to create a camera to determine if they could catch this so-referred to as demon to use it. After several inexplicable occurrences -- the mattress room door slamming, hearing actions downstairs -- Micah sprinkles talcum powder with the bed mattress and with the hallway. What went lower in 'Paranormal Activity 2' This movie is essentially a prequel, with many different the plot occurring just before the occurrences within the first film. It starts getting a couple, Kristi and Serta, finding their home completely destroyed having a potential crook. Really the only factor that was untouched was their infant boy Hunter's room. The home invasion causes Serta to create a thief system with surveillance cameras. Katie and Micah (right before the occasions in 'Paranormal Activity') visit the couple's home. After Kristi and Katie admit they have been struggling with a spirit from when they were little, Dan's daughter (and Kristi's step-daughter) Ali begins considering demons. She discovers that inside your eliminate a demon is always to sacrifice the initial male child (a.k.a. Hunter) in Kristi and Katie's family. This is where a lot of crazy starts to occur: your pet suffers a seizure, the pool cleaner increases in the pool alone, Hunter can get moved round his crib throughout the evening. One evening, while Ali and Serta are out, Kristi is drawn from Hunter's room and into the basement. The very next day, Ali finds scratches round the basement door. She watches the surveillance video and sees the footage of Kristi being drawn with a hidden pressure. At this time around, Serta decides to accomplish really the only factor they can: pass the demon onto another family member. He chooses Kristi's sister, Katie. Guy Up!
Credits: Shot in La by Bicycle Path Prods. and Tagline Television in colaboration with ABC Galleries. Executive producers, Christopher Moynihan, Victor Fresco, Ron West, Kelly Kulchak producer, Marc Solakian director, Janet McCarthy Burns author, Moynihan. With: Mather Zickel, Serta Fogler, Christopher Moynihan, Teri Polo, Amanda Detmer, Henry Simmons, Mike Manley, Charlotte now Labadie.Remember "Traffic Light," that was on Fox, like, last season? It had been only the newest kinda-funny casualty within the male-stress genre, by which suburban trios of men expose their inner Peter Pans, mostly by playing videogames and whining. For the reason that regard think about ABC's "Guy Up!" -- combined with "Last Guy Standing" inside a thematically compatible otherwise particularly appealing block -- as "The Hangover: Part TV," going through the tired question of whether modern occasions have created an over-developed generation of girly males. Alas, it'll take a lot more than sociology to function up this stale sitcom. Producer-author Christopher Moynihan also co-stars as Craig, an associate from the central group, who avoid their daily responsibilities by playing an initial-person shooter game because they talk with one another putting on earphones. The anchor is clearly Will (Mather Zickel), whose brother-in-law Kenny (Serta Fogler) is divorced and chafing in the fact his ex (Amanda Detmer) is dating the guy of anybody's dreams ("NYPD Blue's" Henry Simmons). Of course, Fogler plays a tightly wound ball of rage, potentially dragging Will into his madcap capers. On the other hand, Will stays lots of his time curious about whether he is able to measure towards the manliness of his father's generation. As a result, Kenny's antics -- or perhaps in the premiere's situation, Craig potentially triggering an ass-kicking by pissed-off groomsman after crashes his ex-girlfriend's wedding -- only has an chance to check what he's truly made from. Finally, there's Will's beautiful/patient/much-wiser-than-he-is wife Theresa (Teri Polo), who may (at the chance of over-thinking things) bear a lesser resemblance to her onscreen brother, Fogler, than any brother or sister pairing in modern TV history. Although a few of the the situation is relatable -- Will's nervous about finding his 13-year-old boy a suitable gift, for just one -- yet others goofily arbitrary (Kenny's dependence on Tobey Maguire), it's presented in this familiar single-camera manner it might be simple to incorrectly assume "Guy Up!" is really a rerun of latest sitcoms past. If there is a surprise here, it's Simmons' comic chops because the perfect physical specimen that has changed Kenny, though making that the regular element -- instead of a gag for that pilot -- offers a feeling of how broad "Guy Up!" will probably be. For the show's future, that almost entirely is dependent on Tim Allen's performance since it's lead-in -- once more departing these males, oddly, subject to an early on generation. On the other hand, even when Allen's show works, this companion half-hour is really thin there's still an opportunity ABC will find yourself throwing "Guy" overboard.Camera, Michael Trim production designer, Ian Phillips editor, Richard Candib music, John Kimbrough casting, Debby Romano, Brett Benner. 30 MIN. Paul Wesley and Ernest Morgan Discuss Their Vampire Journals Bromance
Paul Wesley, Ernest Morgan Sure, Elena (Nina Dobrev) grows closer to Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Caroline (Candice Accola) is cozying around Tyler (Michael Trevino), and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is hooking up with Bonnie (Kat Graham), nevertheless the couple we're really digging is sexy vampire BFFs Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Klaus (Ernest Morgan). And basically hold back until the truth is the bloody damage they're doing relating to this week's episode. However, the heavens discuss associations, redemption, being British and playing bad. TV Guide Magazine: You wreak havoc so well together. You're pals before Ernest grew to become an associate from the show, weren't you? Wesley: We met through pals and immediately stood a good rapport. Joseph's a really awesome guy and therefore once i was talking to [executive producer] Julie Plec about Klaus, I mentioned, "You have to think about this person Ernest Morgan." Morgan: I wondered why Julie told casting to call me! Wesley: And six several days later I heard he was cast. TV Guide Magazine: Your figures are killing their way through America, trying to build up a hybrid werewolf-vampire military. What's it would rather collaborate on such intense, blood stream-drenched moments? Morgan: Klaus really just wants companionship with someone as dark, otherwise deeper, than he's, and so the more we explore Stefan the Ripper, the higher fun we've. Wesley: What's awesome, too, is always that our figures have this history. Stefan just learned that he'd been compelled to forget that Klaus which he were pals formerly. It's completely shocking to him, nevertheless it makes him see Klaus not just as this archetypal evil guy. He's out of the blue a guy that Stefan empathizes with. Morgan: I'm so excited to determine which measures Stefan goes. I wonder if he'll exceed Klaus within the evilness. Wesley: I'm all for the! TV Guide Magazine: Appears like you are receiving a lot of fun playing Ripper Stefan. Wesley: It's as being a weight is off my shoulders, honestly. I used to be reducing on Stefan in Season 2. He needed to exhibit more defects. You will not ever saw him experiencing themselves as they was always safeguarding everyone. It is therefore nice not have this oppressive air of him always needing to behave the right way. TV Guide Magazine: But wait, how bad can Stefan go before he cannot be pardoned? He's stated to become the show's romantic hero! Wesley: Even when he's up to now gone that you just think there's not a way we're ever prone to like or trust this individual again, I still believe the authors hold the capacity of redeeming him. Morgan: Damon's been pardoned. For much. Though my character killing Aunt Jenna [Sara Canning], I really do question if there's any redemption there. Wesley: I believe that it is very simple to redeem you. Morgan: You'll forgive me? Wesley: Yes, however i am biased. TV Guide Magazine: This appears just like a genuine bromance. Morgan: It's sounding just a little suspect. We must tone it lower! TV Guide Magazine: Will this be described as a extended-term relationship? Morgan: I don't think someone's prone to appear and re-compel Stefan inside a couple of days and everything goes back on track and he's with Elena. As with all relationship, it has more difficult making more layers. I am excited to find out where it's going. Wesley: Can one come with an Episode 13 breakup text within you? Morgan: I won't take action by text. TV Guide Magazine: Between your killings, can fans expect any romantic interludes of those males? Wesley: When there is lots evil to accomplish, there's hardly any room for really emotional, visceral romance. Any idea what, dude? Morgan: I question how Klaus would react to a romantic interest. He's an entire self-involved egomaniac. But no less than he's protective of his sister Rebecca [Claire Holt], so that has been a enjoyable change. TV Guide Magazine: Julie Plec signifies that Klaus wasn't born evil but that his parents just didn't love him enough. Morgan: Yeah, he's the item from the dysfunctional family. The dad of his siblings and siblings isn't his father - his mother had an affair with someone in the werewolf bloodline. So more often than not there's been that feeling of not loved round his siblings and siblings. He carries his entire family around in boxes. I like that. He's destroyed them essentially he wants to make sure that they are close. Now he wants Stefan which hybrid military being his new family, to switch the love he's missing. TV Guide Magazine: But Stefan is keeping something pretty large from Klaus, the fact Elena did not die through the sacrifice. Morgan: [That secret] must be launched when friendship occasion to advance. Wesley: Every relationship is about trust, Klaus. Otherwise we should separate. [They laugh.] TV Guide Magazine: Has Stefan discovered about Elena and Damon's growing closeness? What is going to he do? Wesley: He suspects. Nevertheless the more he gives straight into his Ripper ways, the less concerned he's. The further he's from Elena, the even further he's from his humanity. Morgan: Stefan and Elena should be attracted apart we required to see more turmoil. Also, there is a large Damon and Elena team available rooting to enable them to be together. TV Guide Magazine: Eventually, doesn't it appear that Stefan will have to select from Klaus and Elena? Wesley: Essentially required to speculate, I'd think that could be a compelling and dramatic approach to beginning from the story. Or even something could happen to Klaus. Morgan: [Laughs] I am unsure simply how much I'd fancy Klaus' chances. There's however always apt to be that link between Elena and Stefan. So possibly eventually, that will win. Won't it? TV Guide Magazine: Romantic! Here is your first American series, Ernest. Which kind of tips did he's, Paul? Wesley: I merely told him not to be so damned British! None of the "cheerio" garbage. Morgan: Therefore I make an effort to put as much cheerios in after i can. The Vampire Journals airs Thursdays at 8/7c round the CW. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
